Ok so the real front page news in this weekend's East Anglian Daily Times is that, local hero, nurse Will Pooley's been awarded a much deserved MBE, but we're delighted to see Woodbridge Arts and Music 2015 get front page banner headline on the weekend edition too! A massive thank you to all at the EADT!!!
Woodbridge Art and Music'c friends at Aldeburgh Music and Suffolk Coastal District Council have announced a competition for an outdoor sculpture for children at Snape Maltings.
The aim is to offer a vantage point across the marshes at Snape and a new view over this flat and beautiful landscape. This new piece will sit in the landscape amongst other works by Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Sarah Lucas and Alison Wilding. Submissions will be made in the form of sketches and a 200 word description of the entrant’s vision. The competition is open to all and the organisers encourage entrants to think broadly and creatively whilst paying close attention to the Equality Act 2010. The winning entry may take the form of a viewing platform, an optical device, a moving structure or a technological marvel. The sculpture must be self-supporting and designed so that it can be put up and taken down annually, with the prospect of touring the region in the future. Roger Wright, Chief Executive at Aldeburgh Music, said: “This is an exciting opportunity to create a wonderful sculpture, inspired by the tradition of children climbing on the site’s existing artworks. We hope that, after its initial siting at Snape Maltings, other destinations will host the new work and that it will tour the area”. A shortlist of three entrants will be awarded £1,000 each to develop their idea further. They will be given time with a structural engineer to help them evolve their scheme into a feasible design. A panel of distinguished judges will select a winner, who will be awarded a commission of £15,000. The winning design will be installed in time for the 69th Aldeburgh Festival in June 2016. The winning designer will have a construction budget of £50,000 and will be supported by the competition organisers throughout the process.
